Color
I was trained in black and white photography. As Ansel Adam’s last photographic assistant in the early 1980s, I was steeped in the nuance of black and white photography and the sublime visual metaphors that can be created with an intimate knowledge and understanding of the shades of black, grey and white. Yet I have always been curious of what color can reveal in the psychology of what we see and how we interpret the world. So, for most of my career after I left Ansel’s studio and while working for Time Magazine, Outside Magazine and The National Geographic, I always pushed myself to explore the beauty and metaphor that can be found through the color palette existing within the natural world.
